There is a plastic hose coupling that holds the sender in the tank, joined
by big hose clamps.
The sender is a plastic tube, with a printed circuit board and a float
inside. The float has a magnet that makes contact with the circuit board
indicating fuel level. When this stops working it is due to the bottom of
the tube breaking free and allowing the float to fall out. The float is easy
to capture in the tank because it's a magnet but the bottom piece from the
sender is a real bitch.
Once you get both pieces out, reassemble them and then JB weld the bottom
piece on so this will not reoccur.

While this was common on the older units it is not often it occurs on
95's on up. First find the two pink wire coming from the sending unit
through the rear hatch. Using a multimeter, check for ohms. If it
reads 0, then it is a bad sending unit. If it reads 89, the float is
no longer floating and needs replacing. Dont follow the service manual
on removing the seat. Just undo the two nuts at the hinge point and
pull the studs out away from the hull. You can then swivel the seat
sideways to get to the rubber plug.

I have only seen it once in all the years I have have been doing this
and it was caused by me pulling the sending unit out at an angle.
Usually it is the fuel sending unit that is bad 90% of the time while
the float no longer floats 10%. On the older units, the magnet had a
tendency to come unglued from the float. The newer ones does not use
that type of float.
