If the battery voltage is 12.7 or higher, everything's fine. If the
voltage gets to 12.6 or less, when you first plug on the lanyard and
turn it over, there's spark for a split second. If the boat starts, it
runs fine. If it doesn't, the spark stops and the only way to get it
back is to remove and reinstall the lanyard, or wait about two
minutes, then you get one more short burst of spark. The boat turns
over great but there's only that short burst of spark, then it goes
away unless the boat starts. So if it doesn't start immediately, it
won't start at all even though it's turning over fast.
I have another '96 XP, so I switched both the front and rear
electrical boxes and get the same results.

The very first thing that I would *TRIPLE* check is the CDI ground wire that
runs from the negative post on the battery to the top connector for the rear
electrical box. Check it thoroughly, especially around the battery lug.
Often there is corrosion inside of the insulation that is difficult to
detect.

Check the starter draw, it shouldn't be any higher than 90 amps. I had one
do the same thing on me. It even had a brand new aftermarket starter in it.
I thought it turned over good until I replaced the starter with the oem one.
Starts now every time.
