When I take my ski out of the water after an afternoon of playing, I
run the engine to get all the water out. When I start it up, it runs at
full revs so I press the off button and then pull off the lanyard to
kill the engine but it keeps on going. I either have to wait for it to
stop in its own time, or pull out the choke to kill it.

Was thinking maybe there is an air leak and the fuel is pre-igniting.
Anyone had this problem before or got any ideas what I can try to do to
fix it?

Cheers

sounds like you have an electrical problem. I assume the XP has a
separate stop switch and lanyard switch? If so and neither of them are
working, check the wire from the switches to the master control box.
Check for corossion etc. That should kill the entire ignition system
so the plugs don't spark. Will the unit start with the lanyard not
installed?

Your other problem where the unit runs as full revs may be a separate
issue. That is usually a carb leak of some kind.

You are right. There must be an airleak. When engine revvs it
bypasses the rev limiter and screams. Pulling the lanyard, pushing
stop, pulling the plug wires are all ineffective. It would be awefully
coincidental that all those different electrical components would go
bad all at once. The places that would have an airleak would probably
be at the intake at the rotary valve cover or your crank seals.
Usually requires an engine teardown to resolve. Good luck to you.
