doctors in the death zone

Watching Doctors in the Death Zone made me wonder wether there was a fixed
rope going all the way to the top of Everest. Nobody seemed to be leading.
Is there a fixed rope?...

On the matter of ethics, if the noble doctors stumbled across a sick
mountaineer should they not abandon their project and do everything in their
power to get that individual down to a safe place? The attitude that if a
sick mountaineers climbing buddies won't change their plans to save him then
we certainly won't (as we have a mission to complete) sounds rather
callous.

The wife of a friend works with a number of those who took part in this,
we were visiting them for a meal last night and she said that the team
had successfully rescued and treated another climber who had been
abandoned by their party as being "impractical" to rescue. I understood
this as "would have put the climber's party at serious and unjustifiable
risk" if a rescue had been attempted.

OK, so is it just me, or did the research seem like a justification for
the expedition.

To a certain extent its bound to be the case. It's similar to all those
people who get you to sponsor them to do a charitable event in some
exotic location.

I'm sure there will also be some interesting science to come out of the
expedition and the data they collected. We already know about the
involvement of things such as the ACE gene and the association of one
allele with survival in extreme conditions. However what might
disappoint some is that it might simply throw up further evidence that
highly successful mountaineers might owe as much to the luck of what
genes they were born with as to any commitment or determination of the
individual.
