Hi all,

I've decided to get myself a jetski / PWC.

I've taken a look at what's available in this neck of the wood (New
Zealand) - read all the reviews and pamphlets I can lay my hands on, and
have (I think) narrowed it down to one of the above two.

I'm looking for something that's comfortable to ride - suitable more for
exploring and towing the kids at low-speed etc - I have no desire to kill
myself or anyone else at some insanely high speed. Looking to buy new - and
I like many of the little features of the top-of-the-line models (reverse +
mirrors + large storage etc)

Just wondering if anyone has any compelling reasons why I should choose one
of these over the other?

On the Honda I like the idea of the GPS (although I already have a Garmin
296, I can't think of a way to mount it easily) - on the flip-side, from
what I've read, the Yamaha might be more comfortable. I'm leaning towards
the Yamaha at this stage. Good choice? Only two other makes in this neck of
the woods appear to be SeeDoo (heard a few stories about suspect
reliability) and Kawasaki (Don't know much about the brand)

Many thanks for all input.

Hey CJS. I and buddy both have FX HO Cruisers and have been
extremely happy with the reliability, comfort features/ergonomics,
rough-water ride/stability, and very much with the fuel efficiency and
range which is tops in its class for 60-mph 3-seater, and for the
unique Cruiser seats which make a world of difference in confidence
and comfort for driver and passenger in rough water or long all-day
riding.
The Honda's are excellent too, I don't know as much about them, but I
am of the opinion that the GPS feature is a complete bust, a waste of
money. I am huge
fan of using a mounted GPS on my pwc adventures and it seems to me the
Honda implementation of it is near useless. You can't name waypoints,
they only get #'s ( so you'd hve to memorize which ones are where or
carry a list with you?), there is no mapping ability, they don't even
use the gps for the speedometer so you can't even use it for accurate
speed readings. Not worth the extra money IMO. It would be much
more useful and cost-efficient to buy a good mapping color handheld
and there
are tons of good solutions people have found for mounting them. I
like the RAM mounts which use interchangeable cradles made
specifically all the popular handheld models. Go to pwctoday.com and
do a search on gps mounting, you'll see lots of pictures and ideas.
So I say if you decide you like the Honda better than the Yamaha,
don't spring for the GPScape, instead choose and buy your own full-
featured gps and go to the trouble of mounting it, you'll be glad you
did. Look up the poster named RiverDad on pwctoday, he posted
pictures of an ingenious mounting system he used with a bigger (fixed-
mount, not handheld) Garmin gps/fishfinder, that was duplicated after
seeing it there by a friend I ride with, for his Kawasaki.

P.S. The super-charged Sea-doo's are great, faster than the other
'skis you are looking at, with great hulls and lots of nice features,
but with vastly inferior fuel efficiency and range, if those matter to
you (they do to me and a lot of the crowd I ride with for the kind of
riding we enjoy the most).
