Will Catfish grab bait off the bottom?

I'm pretty new to catfishing and was wondering,
If my bait happens to be resting on the lake bottom, will catfish pick
it up? or does it need to be suspended in the water for the best
effect?

Most people catch cats with the bait on the bottom,, you bet they will
get it from there,,,,, but, if it is like 6 inches off the bottom, they
get it quicker, they don't have to dig it out of the muck, the scent of
the bait travels further, and they can see it instead of "just" smelling it.
