Little section on the London Local TV news last night about the water
quality of the River Lea. The program featured comments from Richard
Metcalf who explained that, when learning, scullers sometimes fall in
to the water.

The issue was that the untreated sewage content in the water was/is
too high. The program was putting blame on the number of people who
have made illegal foul connections to the storm water system.

They failed to point out that the primary problem is Thames Water's
over flow outlets, which are up stream of the Olympic Park.

Thames Water are obliged to open the sluices after periods of heavy
rain because there systems become overloaded. A significant proportion
of this has caused by the formation of parking spaces where there used
to be front gardens.

How kind of you to remind me David Wink

My memory is that as I slowly sank through a layer of tar and petrol, a
rather frantic marshal ran up the towpath imploring me not to move. This
seemed a little odd, but it is always best to follow local advice, so I
complied. He then explained that I needed to keep quite still whilst the
safety boat made its way to me, so that I did not get tangled in the
detritus on the bottom.

Top tip: Remove your track suit bottoms before going afloat.
