This appears to be in Washington State, USA, to save anyone else who's
never heard of it.

The DN class just had their North American Championships last weekend on
Lake Michigan, sailing out of Menominee, Michigan.

Results are here: http://www.idniyra.org/results/results07_na.html

Interesting, don't those things always beat to weather because the apparent
wind is forward all the time?

Yes,
In fact the hard trick is going to "leeward" fast.
Mind bender:
To slow down, you turn down wind and let the boat slow to wind speed.
