The RW forum has been hacked.
On my browser I only can read: "Hacked by Cobra ATESKES.ORG"
Anyone knows how to fix this?

Depends on how much has been hacked. The whole site seems to be offline
now.
Others should consider some hints to harden their systems against such
attacks.
- If you use phpbb, remove the copyright notices (powered by...). I know
that the developers ask you to leave it in place, but what kind of
advertisement is a hacked board?
Background: Most of these attacks are automated and find these forums
through an ordinary google search for '+powered by phpbb +2.0.11' or the
like.
- You can go further this way by renaming the viewtopic.php to something
else throughout your board.
- Play with the user register page. I've done a very small addition to
it (just a checkbox that needs to be clicked upon registration) and no
automated spam users have appeared since on the board that I help
running. This also prevents automated attacks (and who on earth
dedicates some hours of work to modify the hacker scripts for some
boring rowing boards).
- Harden your webserver - if it's not shared webhosting. Less features
mean more security. Also consider using a webserver other than xAMP.
- Subscribe to the board's developers newsletter to get notification of
the latest security issues. |

I hope they've survived. Has anyone heard from any of them? Being
hacked sounds quite gory. |

I thought you'd like to support the new www.rowingillustrated.com
Boards that have emerged out of the ashes of Rowersworld, so I'm
pasting their e-mail here:
Hi All
We would like to welcome you to the new Bulletin Boards.
We would like to take some time to share some ideas with you all.
Going forward it would like to open up this site a bit more to the
community.
We would like to re-introduce blogging/writing to the site. It has
been a great read in the past for all levels of rowing. We would like
to draw passionate people from all over the rowing community to write.
It would be great to have college athletes, coaches, club athletes;
elite athletes and even boatmen share their ideas with the community.
We want all voices to be heard. If interested please contact Sean Wolf
for details.
At some point we would like to introduce pod casting to the site. It
would be great to hear different coxswains; it would be great to see
races on line a few hours after they happened. It would be awesome
just to have rowing commentary to share among our community. This will
take some time though we will try. If you have some experience in this
please contact us.
We will do our best to fundraise for the site and our community. We
look to do more for rather than just support the site. We would like
to create a "boat club" so that we can have members of our community
row together in the Head of the Charles as well as other races in the
future. We may award this boat to a program or award members of the
site by having the community of Rowing Illustrated vote on the entry
and/or its participants.
One of our other biggest goals is too earmark 25-50% of the funds
raised though Rowing Illustrated to funding a non-Olympic class boat
for Worlds. These funds will go towards a Canadian or USA boat of the
Rowing Illustrated community's choice. This will be done by a vote
from our membership.
We have big goals ahead and we do appreciate your voice and your
assistance if you can help or volunteer in any of these matters please
contact Sean and we thank you in advance.
Please forward our letter link out to all rowers; coaches, boatman and
coxswains so that everyone can take part the future.
www.rowingillustrated.com
Thank you, Cheers and Beers,
Sean Wolf
