Mahe Drysdale beat Rob Waddell by half a length. Followed them down in
the umpires boat. Great race. Still not sure who's got what left.

This is pretty interesting and compelling drama as far
as sport goes.
I'm sure it's big in NZ and Oz, but totally unheard of here in the
US, in fact I spot checked w/ my niece who has begun rowing
in college this year, and she knew nothing about it.
I was trying to think about how this might be promoted to
make rowing more visible here in the US, but I fear
the sports/entertainment audience here to be too stupid. |

If she knows where NZ is she's in the top 2%. <;^)

Mike,
Or too inundated with the same. Our impression is that for the US not
to have the top three in any sport should cause them worry. The
Waddell / Drysdale conundrum would not be unusual in the US. The pity
with us is that we only have (on average) about six people/teams
capable of being a world champion at any time. To have two in one
event is a waste of resources: to the US it is how it should be.

I'm trying to apply it to sports that are very strong in US,
Track and Field, Swimming, and can't remember a scenario
that plays out quite the same way, since more than one
athlete are allowed to compete in each individual event.
If Michael Phelps had a rival here, they could both choose the
same events, both qualify in those events and play out the
drama at the Olys.
This is compelling in that one can imagine the process to
select the best sculler fairly could possibly damage the chances
of that sculler (I'm not saying that it does). |

maybe that's because Mahe has been such a regular feature on the
Tideway (London, UK) in recent years - it's always interesting to
follow someone you know (or feel like you do!)

then again, I seem to remember the Evers-Swindell sisters getting
quite a bit of press here too.
