With a few hours to kill this afternoon I ventured into the LT museum and
discovered that they've an amazing collection of rowing posters - and not
just the Boat Race either. There are among the collection posters
advertising both Moseley and Twickenham regattas, the HoRR and Boat race
training - who could imagine such a thing these days? Apart from that
they're brilliant works of graphic design and I'm particulary fond of the
1912 and 1935 Boat Races and 1939 HoRR ones which perhaps the 1913 Boat Race
as favourite.

You can see them here http://tinyurl.com/2d8lyu

Fabulous! No wonder these regattas attracted huge crowds of
spectators. Have we no artists who could inspire the current
generation of competitors and supporters? Judging by our sorry
attempt at an Olympic logo, the answer would seem to be "no".

I especially like The river derby (1926)

and O&CBR (1938)

I would have thought that the point is rather: has Richmond Regatta
(for example) got the money to pay for a poster advertising campaign
on the tube? Probably not.

AIUI the advertising campaigns of the early 20th century were not
mounted and paid for the by events but by London Transport itself,
which was constantly trying to find events and attractions to entice
people to use the under-utilised suburban lines at off-peak hours. LT
was also trying to encourage people to move out to the suburbs (viz.
Metroland etc).

During those glory days (and especially under the management of Frank
Pick) good graphic design was a key part of LT's vision and it was
regularly commissioning work from extremely talented commercial
artists.

personal interest alert ** personal interest alert

Rock the Boat had lots comments along the line of "should have asked
you for the Olympic logo" when we released the Going for Gold (GB
Rowing 2008) logo last Autumn, and there are loyal customers who have
every single HoRR souvenir t-shirt including from cancelled race
years!
The second collection here (from Ancho) was all gathered together in a
paperback book which I bought at the 1997 Worlds in Koln, have been
looking for it for a gift for my artist friend ever since!
Now I can give her this link perhaps she'll let me have the book back.

I had no idea there was a regatta run in Moseley, had no idea there
was even a river running anywhere near there in fact and I lived down
the road in selly oak for over a year. The only bits of water i ever
saw in that general area were edgbaston reservoir and the birmingham
canal where it ran by the uni campus (and one could probably have run
an interesting slalom course on that particular canal dodging all the
dumped supermarket trollies and other assorted garbage floating in
it).

is it run under ARA rules or is it a private affair?

Bookie: I can't tell if you're being serious and I know you! I suspect
you do have your tongue thrust firmly in cheek.

For those that don't, Chris has made the common mistake of mis-
spelling Molesey, that well know bit of river populated by a club also
know as the Black Death. Currently where many ex-Olympians go to while
away their twilight years.

yeah sorry , I am just being a pedant as per usual, I just find it
funny when people mix up moseley and molesey as so many do. having
been to and lived just down the road from both I can assure you that
they are very different places.

Molesey is a lovely place, personally I am not so sure about Moseley,
but then I am not a big fan of brum in general, might be something to
do with the accents.

That's a terrible mistake for me to make! Blame it on the dyslexia.

Molesey when they venture up this way get heartily sick of being
misreferred.

Almost as much as Moseley down south, maybe!
