I have always fished for trout in the lakes. Now I am interested to fish
for catfish before the season is over.

How would I set my line differently when I fish for catfish? Here in San
Diego the lakes are stocked with 1 to 3 pound catfish.

When I fish for tourt I use a leader line and a little bit of weight. Do I
need to use a leader line when I want to fish for catfish?

What should be my fishing line strenght?

What kind of a bait and hook works best?

Please advice.

Thanks,

Rob

If you are fishing in California, For what it cost to go fishing your
better off to buy fish from the store. And you will get a clean fish,

Hello Rob,

Most of your questions all depend on "What works for you". I could
tell you what works for me, but it seems what works for each person
varies. As for hooks, you could try regular J hooks, Kahles Hooks, or
try Circle Hooks. Circle hooks is a little different then using J
hooks, as the hooks is designed to set it's self, which means you
don't jurk the rod setting the hook yourself.

Lead line - Not needed. When you fish for the Big Cats, some people
will use a leader line that is stronger then there main line, but that
again depends on the person and also the location where you fish. If
you are fishing with lots of rocks, you don't want to use Braided line
cause it will rub on the rocks and break.

Pound Line - For 3lb cats, I think 10lb line would be fine. The color
doesn't matter, but I find that a lot of people will use either clear
line or red line (cajun brand).

Hi Robert. 1 -3 lb cats can be fun. Use light line - light leaders - circle
hooks . If you're using mono I would suggest using a swivel (to prevent line
twist) and about a foot to eighteen inches of mono or flourocarbon leader.
As far as the baits go, catfish are game for about anything. Hot dogs
chunks, prepared baits, worms, etc. I like to use a cast net to get what
they are naturally feeding on... it makes them less wary and more likely to
take the bait without apprehension. There are many web sites that will give
you useful information to get you started. Good Luck

use salted down shad for bait 20lb test line a good 7.5 ft rod heavy
action n a good abu ambassadur reel tie a 18 inch leader on a 3 way
swivle for the hook and a 12 inch leader about 10 to 12 lb line for the
3/4 oz egg sinker bottom fish and hang on cats big n smal cant seem to
resist the taste of salted down shad the salt makes the shad tough
enough to stay on the hook for casting good luck
