Fly Fishing in New Orleans

We're going to be in New Orleans for Jazz Fest from
April 24th to May 5th. The Jazz Fest lineup is *great*
this year and they've gone back to the 7 day format
for the first time since Katrina. We're there mostly
for the music of course but I'll have some time on
Mon-Wed, April 28-30 to get out of town and maybe wet
a line somewhere. Any suggestions ?

Something that's looked interesting is the Venice area for Redfish and
Specks. Seems like it would be a blast. Just looking at that place
from google maps...intriguing. Would love to hear what others have to
say that have been there.

Venice is more of a tuna port - in fact, I was supposed to be there
rather than be here typing this, but I need to be in the city tomorrow
and Tuesday - and the rest of my "group" IS there as I type this. I'll
have a full report Monday or Tuesday and will post it.

IAC, there's no need to go down to Venice for specks - you can catch
them from skiffs right out front in MS (lower limits) or right over the
line in LA water, closer and easier to NO and the Fest than Venice. That
said, well, see below...

Ken - if by "wet a line" you literally mean wetting a line, there's
plenty of things on offer, including dropping some real coin in Venice,
assuming you can find a boat at this point. If that's what you're
after, get out the AMEX and get to reserving, like, yesterday - the trip
my bunch is on was booked with a skipper we _know_ well, in Oct.-Nov,
and he literally couldn't bump it 1 day front or back - 2 of the
original 6, myself included, had a slight conflict. If you mean
specifically catching something easily, not involving boats, and doing
so with a fly rod, I'd suggest some brim/bream fishing. Bring any ol'
rod between about a 3 and 7, a spool of cheap tippet, and a handful of
cheap-ass Royal Coachman/Wulffs (if you want to bring your own gear) and
I can arrange for enough brim for a sizable fry in an afternoon (about
an hour of travel time and about a 1/4 tank of gas, and you'll never be
much more than a short walk from cold beer, grub, etc.

I can catch bluegill right here at home, I'm looking more for
some fly fishing unique to the Gulf Coast. You know, using an
8 or 9wt to catch something I've never caught before. Deep sea
tuna fishing isn't my cup of tea, I'm looking for something
more like this guy:

We're coming in by train so I can bring whatever gear I need
and I'll have to rent a car for a couple or three days no
matter where I end up fishing so anything within an hour or
so of the condo is fine. We're staying fairly close to your
place, we rented a condo on Frenchmen St. just outside the
Quarter.

roff I just surfed the Internet and blindly picked a charter
that looked good. I decided on this one:

I've never caught a redfish before so I'm looking forward to
the attempt. TR to follow in May.

And Rick, the bluegill fish fry sounds great too, I scheduled
the redfish trip for Tuesday April 29th so we could do bluegill
on the 28th or 30th.
