Hi,

Can anybody tell how many ppl climb with out a permit in Nepal?
Specially in Mera peak?
And also interested to know about Yala, Chulu, Mardi, Pisang.

What about checking from police or NMA?
What is fine or Punishment?
What is the frequency of climbing without a permit?

Ratul.

Many years ago, I did 3 different trips to Nepal. Between 85 - 93. Back then I
climbed many peaks. Most unknown (better) a few wanted. (popular) If I was
caught, I would have been fined up to 500 dollars, and kicked out of Nepal for 5
years. Remember - that was quite a while ago.

I never climbed any special peaks. (protected or holy to the local people)
That's down right disrespectful. A few of the unknown peaks, were much higher
than 6,000 meters. I like climbing - for the action and sceenery. I don't
climb peaks for their "name". Therefore in most countries, I can climb free . .

of course not. that's the precisely the trick.

sheesh. droll or troll? i suspect the latter -- but as i've been
called both, i'll devote all of 30 seconds to perhaps saving you from
yourself.

(1) if you really want to climb one of the peaks you mention, aclimate
for a couple weeks (hard) then hang out at the std base camp for any
of the peaks you mention. (just follow the foot prints and look for
the pee stains). that and bring at least 5,000 nepali rupees (about US
$70) - ideally in 100NR notes. just wave these at the next NMA
trekking peak "expedition" that happens to wander by (won't take long
on any of the popular peaks you've mentioned). and viola! you're
legal, get a hot lunch (or 5), and have at least a chance that some
local kid will keep you on route and out of the crevasses. given the
cost and effort of getting even close, rather a good value. no?

your other option is (2) avoid any of the trade routes you've
mentioned, in fact avoid khumbu and the annapurna sanctuary entirely.
think west (left) of either and you will find something that will
surely scare the poop out of you, which you can fall off of for free,
un-regulated, and in complete anonymity. and unless you expire in an
especially deep crevasse, you get an old school tibetan 'air burial'
at no extra cost. such a deal.

> Specially in Mera peak?

sheesh. one of the two NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association)
"authorized representatives" for Mera and environs has an exquisite
view of the route (and the route to the route) from his outhouse.
really. i had plenty of time to take a photo from just there not all
that long ago as i squeezed out my last dhal bhaat (or 3). exquisite
view, one of the best pooperies i have, um, participated in. 97.315%
you'd get busted.

do you realize how much real estate you're talking about here?

the answer is, of course, that if you don't already know the answer
first hand, the answer is no. that and the only way to know the
answer is to go there, stay awhile, and pay attention.

> What about checking from police or NMA?

think humla or dolpa. you won't find either 'police' or NMA there.
of course the maoists will likely charge you far more.

> What is fine or Punishment?

ooh, i've read that. dostoevsky, no? but if you get it wrong (as is
almost certain on one's first trip), you will find as raskolnikov did
that the law is the least of your problems. see (1), above.

> What is the frequency of climbing without a permit?

nevers happens. though i did, maybe, once watch a magnificent climber
out of wyoming solo cho oyu from the south. when i struggled up (a
little) to congratulate him on the way down he promised to rip my
tongue out if i ever told the tale. huh. on second thought, i don't
think i ever did see a magnificent climber out of wyoming solo cho oyu
from the south.

see (1), above.

better yet, on your first trip, just spend a few months walking,
ideally far from the beaten trekker tracks. then go back later to
climb. for then you will know precisely where to go, what to climb,
and whether a permit is worth the cost.

Its done. Not super common. Daylight, good weather and a popular
season would be your enemy. Night time ascent, snow storm, in winter,
my bet is you'd get away with it.

Haven't been since the early 90's, but, rumor was back then if a
local, especially anyone who guides or porters nearby, caught you,
then they would extort as much money out of you as possible, then turn
you over to the next guy, repeat, then when you've been bled dry of
funds, turn you over to the authorities. Then, apparently, the
process starts over from there.

I dunno. We got a permit, which, was easy and not too spendy at the
time.

I think in recent years they've loosened up some of the permit fees
and requirements for some of the peaks. Maybe pick something that's
not on the "list" and requires a permit.

Not to mention in recent years some trekers off the beaten
track have been known to pay a mandatory contribution
to the Maoist militia "national reconstuction fund", i.e. a thinly
disquised ransom to be allowed to go your own way.
