What a question,, there are many best, here are just a few

The rig most use is a Slip weight rig,,, weight, then swivel, leader
then hook, The cat never feels the weight as the line slides through it
when the take the bait, one of the best on the bottom rigs, especially
for Blue cats

Also some use a drop weight rig, three way swivel, with a short leader
to the hook and longer one to the weight, this is fished "tight" lined,,
great for moving water.

In still water where you don't have to throw very far, nothing beats a
circle hook baited with a chicken liver, and no weight (wrap, don't tie,
about a foot of sewing thread around the liver baited hook, this keeps
the liver on better than any other method, (it's fast, it's cheap, and
it's easy)

Now my personal all around best rig is two StandOut hooks (see this web
page http://ezknot.com/SUHooks.html ) 12 inches apart tied to the main
line, with a 1 OZ or bigger weight 6 inches below the bottom hook, then
a "small" bobber a foot or more above the top hook, this keeps both
baits off the bottom, although the float is carried underwater by the
weight, it is there only to keep the bait off the bottom. (this rig can
also be used with a floating "slip float", for those who like to watch a
float, just set you float stop knot at the water depth)

At night , in the summer time, the cats come in close to shore to feed,
the later in the night, the closer they come in. I have caught many huge
cats in 2 to three feet of water, close to the bank, late at night.

In most cases just a weight, hook, and bait is all you need to cat fish,
you can catch "some" cats (if there are any cats there) just doing it
any old way Smile
