Neat. The article mentions old Len Habbitts, later a stalwart at
Barclays Bank RC on the Putney Hard. |

Len Habbitts, the only man to have competed in the Scullers Head with
both ankles in plaster, having broken them both about four weeks
before. He had competed in every Scullers Head since the first and
'saw no reason not to compete' that year.
Two Barclays Bank men accompanied him in sculling boats, like two
mother ducks, up to the start and over the course.
I dont think they had actually entered the race and therefore received
some stick from the marshalls.
He started last and sculled over at the end of the procession well
muffled up in tracksuit and long scarf wrapped around his neck; didnt
go very fast but I dont think he came last. Someone must have the
results somewhere.
The Umpire followed about three lengths back.
Very unsafe, very foolhardy, absolutely irresponsible, and an
appalling example to all.
Wouldn't be allowed today and quite rightly.
Good for him |

Me too. Thanks for digging up Andy's articles. Between he and Mendenhall,
there is a wealth of rowing history in the old Oarsman and Rowing magazines. |

Mike,
I agree with you about Andy Anderson and Mendenhall. Remarkable men! Good
writers!
I found Mendenhall in Peter Mallory's Row2k article on Joe Burk. Whenever I
stumbled upon a quotation I liked in that piece, I searched the footnotes
for the author. Turned out that most of the quotes that appealed to me were
from Thomas C Mendenhall, so I ordered his book
It also turns out that a good friend of mine knew him quite well, but in a
different capacity. My friend was in the History Department at Yale and knew
Mendenhall as a senior faculty member and a great historian. He had no idea
that Mendenhall had any interest in rowing or had published anything about
the sport.
Funny world, eh?
Do you know where I might be able to find old issues of the Oarsman and
Americian Rowing magazines that you mention?
Cordially,

There are tons of them out there, most of us old farts have probably
25% each of the total collections. I've got a couple feet worth on
a shelf that's left over. About 1/2 of my collection has been
'borrowed'. Certainly, US rowing has crates of old issues somewhere.
Come on by the lake. |

I heard Len Habbits did the scullers head one year and was so slow
that the tide turned before he had finished the course and so they
towed him over the line so that he could say he'd finished the race!
